Adding Google Tag Manager

Step 0 of 4 completed
1
Create a GTM Account

Go to tagmanager.google.com and create an account. Enter your school name and website URL. Select ‘Web’ as the target platform. GTM will generate a container with two code snippets.

2
Install on Your Site

Copy both code snippets. The first goes in the <head> section and the second goes immediately after the opening <body> tag. Use a plugin like Insert Headers and Footers to add these without editing theme files.

Pro Tip
If your site already uses Google Analytics via a plugin, you may want to remove the plugin and manage Analytics through GTM instead โ€” this avoids double-counting.
3
Add Tags

In the GTM dashboard, click ‘Add a new tag’. Common tags include Google Analytics GA4, Facebook Pixel, Google Ads conversion tracking, and Hotjar. Each tag needs a trigger (usually ‘All Pages’).

4
Publish the Container

Click ‘Submit’ in the top right of GTM to publish your changes. Add a version name (e.g. ‘Initial setup’) for tracking. Use GTM’s Preview mode to test tags before publishing.
