Understanding Backups & Disaster Recovery
Why Backups Matter
Your website is a business-critical asset. A robust backup strategy protects you against data loss from accidental deletions, hacking attempts, server failures, or bad updates. With proper backups, any issue can be reversed quickly.
How InnerMedia Backups Work
All InnerMedia-hosted sites benefit from multiple layers of backup:
- Automatic daily backups — Kinsta takes a full snapshot of your site every day, retained for 30 days
- System-generated backups — Created automatically before major environment changes
- Manual backups — We can create on-demand backups before major updates or migrations
- External backups — For additional security, backups can be exported to external storage
Restoring from a Backup
If something goes wrong, we can restore your site to any backup point within the last 30 days. The restoration process typically takes 5–15 minutes depending on site size. During restoration, your live site continues to serve the current version until the restore is complete.
Most restorations are completed within 15 minutes. For urgent issues, contact us immediately and we will prioritise the restore.
What Backups Include
Each backup is a complete snapshot of your entire site — all files (themes, plugins, uploads, media) and the full database (pages, posts, settings, form submissions). Nothing is left out.
Your Responsibilities
While we handle the technical backup infrastructure, we recommend that you keep a separate copy of any critical documents, original images, or content that would be difficult to recreate. If you have content stored only on the website and nowhere else, consider exporting it periodically.
Backups protect against technical failures and mistakes. They do not replace the need for good security practices — strong passwords, limited admin access, and keeping software up to date.
