Creating a Short Link for a UTM Tracking URL

Step 0 of 5 completed
1
Create the page as normal
  1. Go to Pages → Add New and build the page as you normally would.
2
Give it a short, memorable link
  1. Under the title, find the Permalink and click Edit.
  2. Set a short slug, e.g. testing, so the page is reachable at yoursite.com/testing.
Pro Tip
A short slug keeps things tidy if you're adding UTM tracking parameters on the end — see the last step.
3
Publish it
  1. Set Visibility to Public (this is the default) and click Publish.
  2. The page needs to be Public for the direct link to work for visitors — Private or Password Protected pages won’t be reachable the same way.
4
Leave it out of your menus
  1. Go to Appearance → Menus.
  2. Make sure the new page isn’t added to any of your navigation menus.

That’s what keeps it “unlisted” — it won’t appear in your site’s navigation, but anyone with the direct link can still view it.

5
Share the link

Share the direct URL (e.g. yoursite.com/70) wherever you need to — an email, a poster, a QR code.

Because the page isn’t linked from anywhere else on the site, it’s also a clean landing page for UTM tracking links. Add your tracking parameters on the end, e.g. yoursite.com/70?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=70th-anniversary, and every visit you see in Google Analytics for that page will have come from the campaign link — there’s no other route for visitors to land there.

Note: being left out of your menus doesn’t guarantee the page is hidden from search engines or your sitemap. If you need it fully excluded from search results as well, get in touch with us and we’ll set that up.
