Update a Link to a PDF or File

Step 0 of 6 completed
1
Upload the new file

Go to Media → Add New and upload the new version of the file.

2
Check for a Replace option first

Your Media Library includes a media replace feature. Click the old file in your Media Library and look for a Replace Media (or similar) option — if you see one, use it. It swaps the file while keeping the exact same URL, so the existing link keeps working automatically and you can skip straight to the testing step below.

3
Copy the new file's URL

If there’s no Replace option, click the newly uploaded file in the Media Library and copy its File URL from the Attachment Details panel.

4
Update the link on your page

Edit the page (or pages) that link to the old file, select the linked text, and update the link’s URL to the new one. Save or Update the page.

5
Remove the old file (optional)

Once you’ve confirmed the new link works, you can delete the old file from the Media Library. See our article on What Happens When You Delete a Document From the Media Library first if you’re not sure.

6
Test it

Open the page in a private/incognito browser window and click the link to confirm it opens the new file correctly.
